IDCC13: What’s in a name? The ‘data scientist’ symposium

The IDCC symposium this year was on ‘What is a data scientist?’ After some shuffling of chairs, Liz Lyon opened proceedings with a quick show of hands on who thought they were a data engineer, data analyst, data librarian, data steward, data journalist or data publisher? Data librarian and data steward got the biggest response, but would these people call themselves data scientists? Or are there other terms they would use?

IDCC13: Bringing people together via DMPs

The DMP workshop at IDCC brought together speakers from all corners of the globe to pursue the common interest of data management planning. The event was kicked off by Martin Donnelly of the DCC who co-organised it with Carly Strasser from the Californian Digital Library. Martin gave some background context, likening research data management to Hydra, a many-headed beast to be tamed. He explained the development of DMP resources and the DMP Online tool before handing off to the next speakers for a round of policy updates.

There have been loads of useful links circulated recently. As an aide-memoire and signpost to others who may have missed them, here's a quick summary.

First off there's a US study to demystify the data management requirements of research funders. This builds on the DCC's policy analysis to extend the classification and add concepts we've not covered. I hope to look at this in more detail next month to see how we can rework our analysis to suit.

Data Citation tutorial at iPres 2012

Monica Duke and Alex Ball will be presenting a tutorial on data citation at iPres 2012 in Toronto, Canada. The tutorial will be held on the 2nd October and registrations are open (early bird registration closes on 1st September).

This is a breath of fresh air. An EU report that does exactly what it says on the tin - in only 3 pages!

The LIBER e-Science working group held three workshops at conferences in 2011-2012. Their final report very succinctly summarises the findings of these and gives 10 prioritised recommendations.

Librarians, data management and listening dogs

DCC staff were at the IFLA World Library and Information Congress last week. The conference was vast, welcoming over 4,200 librarians to Helsinki and addressing all manner of library concerns. The programme included a number of sessions relevant to data management on the days we attended. Highlights are provided below.

After giving a presentation on DMP Online at the Future Perfect conference, Martin and I visited ANDS staff in the Canberra and Mebourne offices. We had some great discussions, sharing common ground and learning from each other's lessons.

The overriding message from the Future Perfect conference was that the future is not perfect! There are lots of digital preservation challenges that we're still grapling with, but on a more optimistic note, we *are* making headway.

The essential data roadmap

Last April the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) wrote to university vice chancellors explaining their Policy Framework on Research Data. This framework set out EPSRC’s principles and expectations concerning how the institutions they fund will ensure that research data generated as a result of their support is appropriately managed and shared. The DCC has provided a simple guide to creating a framework.

Developing a roadmap for RDM

We trialled a new session at the Loughborough roadshow on developing data policy and services. This ended with an excerise on producing an RDM roadmap, as the EPSRC requirement to do this by May 2012 is uppermost on many people's minds.
