There have been loads of useful links circulated recently. As an aide-memoire and signpost to others who may have missed them, here's a quick summary.

First off there's a US study to demystify the data management requirements of research funders. This builds on the DCC's policy analysis to extend the classification and add concepts we've not covered. I hope to look at this in more detail next month to see how we can rework our analysis to suit.

Turning roadmaps to action

Scrutiny of the Protection of Freedoms Bill brings calls from peers for 'temporary exemption' for data if researchers undertake to deposit in an archive. This is one of many amendments being considered that would bring FOI legislation in the rest of the UK closer to the Scottish law, exempting research intended for publication. But does this buck the trend towards openness? How can the legislation be tweaked to promote better data management as a route to more transparent research with reusable outputs?

Tools for data management planning

The DCC ran a workshop at IDCC which brought together the teams that have developed the UK and US data management planning tools: DMP Online and DMP Tool. The workshop initially looked at the data policies in each country that define requirements for data management and sharing plans.
