The organisers of DCC’s special event, Funding Research Data Management, which took place on 25^th April at Aston University, can surely claim that the essence of the debate (about what is acceptable, feasible and achievable in the use of research grant funding for the provision of data infrastructure and services) has at long last been laid bare under the light of expert scrutiny.

The final session of the closing workshop for the JISC Managing Research Data ought to be a time for reflection on the whole programme, and of course it was. Programme Manager Simon Hodson introduced a six-strong panel to answer two questions, first “what were the biggest successes and areas of progress in the last few years”, and two “what recommendations would you make for the next steps to develop a coherent research data management infrastructure and support service?”

IDCC13 and the Research Data Alliance

I'm currently on my way to Gothenburg for the first plenary meeting of the Research Data Alliance, or RDA as I'll refer to it from here on. It seems an appropriate point to fulfil a promise I made a month ago in my overview of IDCC13. I promised when I wrote that post that I would be writing separately about the pre-conference workshop we ran on the Research Data Alliance. Somewhat belatedly, this is that report.

IDCC13: on reflection

IDCC13 and its associated workshops took place in Amsterdam a few weeks ago - the first time we've run the International Digital Curation Conference in continental Europe. The increased attendance and enthusiastic involvement of many new colleagues from northern Europe certainly made the move worthwhile for us and we look forward to returning in future years. In this post I'll pick out a few of my personal highlights from the event and also describe the growing amount of conference material, from papers to blog posts, that's available from the DCC site.

In his talk at IDCC, Ewan Birney, Associate Director of the EMBL European Informatics Institute, described how the field of genomics has paved the path to large-scale data sharing. The field now publicly confronts the issues arising from breaches to privacy as a result of such sharing. An editorial in Nature titled, “Genetic Privacy,” was published just one day after the January 16 panel at IDCC.

IDCC13 Data Publication: generating trust around data sharing

Publishing data is hardly a new concept, for example the Journal of Physical and Chemical Reference Data is in its 42^nd volume. But reference datasets are of course an exception to the rule; maps of the known disciplinary terrain rather than the stuff normally encountered when exploring it. Recently though the idea of a ‘data journal’ has gained a lot of traction as a vehicle for publishing research data.

The value of a one-to-one

Marieke and I were in Northampton yesterday as part of the DCC institutional engagements. A few months back Miggie suggested we kick off our one-to-one support by running a preliminary 'research data clinic' where we invite researchers to come along and share their RDM problems. This reminded me of a service we used to run via AHDS - researchers could book short consultations around the workshops that we ran. We were all fired up by the idea and put together a poster to advertise it.

JISC workshop takes data repository options further

Alternative solutions to depositing data in repositories were the topic of one sessions in the JISC workshop on Components of Institutional Research Data Services, 24-25 October in Nottingham. This was one of the more popular of the eight sessions, so much so that it had to be split in two.
